New London considering removal of Christopher Columbus Statue!!!

The “Black Lives Matter” movement is running all across our state and many people have participated in the same. Even in many places police have participated as well. In Connecticut we can say this has been more or less peaceful. Apart from some places where interstates have been clocked there are primarily not much of violence in many parts of the state.

However, there is one place i.e. New London that has been in news for similar news related to the statue of Christopher Columbus. In downtown New London CT there is a statue of Christopher Columbus. It has been there for many years. There has been an initiative going on in Change.org to take it down.

At the same time there are many people who believe that he helped in many expeditions in America and finding out the Indian. This statue was a gift to the town by the Italian immigrants nearly a century ago. As per the petition, Columbus never stepped foot in North America, and he represented a time in which Native people were exploited for the benefit of European powers. New London being one of the city in Connecticut known for it’s diverse culture with many different races and ethnicities living side by side, the demand has been to take down this statue.

As per the petition, New London should not have a statue of this man as he represents nothing positive for CT. Instead, there should be a statue of the African captives that led the revolt on La Amistad in 1839. The ship, once taken over by the slaves, sailed up the East Coast until the American Navy brought it into New London to dock.

The petition is running in change.org where more than 6600 people have already signed for this change. Though this had been a demand for many days now but the death of Gearge Floyd has been a tipping point in this whole episode.
