Mike Barbis – Longtime Norwalk Board Of Education Member Dies in Norwalk CT

Norwalk Public Schools announced Wednesday that the longtime Board of Education member Mike Barbis has died. In a Facebook post, the district said its members were deeply saddened by Barbis’ unexpected death and noted that he was “a passionate and knowledgeable advocate” for Norwalk students and schools.

“Mike dedicated a lot of his life to the city of Norwalk, the students of Norwalk, and did everything he could to try to make the public school system the best in the state,” Mayor Harry Rilling said in a statement. “We have made great strides during his time on the board.”

Norwalk Board of Education Chair Colin Hosten said Wednesday morning he was still in shock over Barbis’ sudden passing.

Mike became a board member in 2011. During his tenure, he served as chairman of the board from 2017-2019. He was also the chair of the board’s finance, facilities and negotiations and personnel committees during his stay.

He was also an active parent volunteer at Brien McMahon High School and a community volunteer in Rowayton, according to the district. Details of a memorial service has not been announced yet.
