3 injured in explosion at Maple Street Seymour CT

An explosion in an apartment building in Seymour CT on Tuesday afternoon injured three people. Traffic on Maple Street near Pearl Street has been halted by police. Officials said they were dispatched to the Maple St Seymour CT around 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon after receiving a report of a gas leak and explosion.

Adam Spark lives in the building and was at home when the incident occurred.

“I was on my couch, I heard a big boom,” he said. “I come outside and I smell that gas and I just know that it was some sort of explosion.”



The explosion occurred on the first floor of a three-story multi-use building in Maple Street Seymour CT, which housed a beauty parlor and housing on the top two floors.

“I immediately got up went to my door, made sure the elderly gentleman below me and the lady who owns the beauty parlor were okay and then I just smelled the gas I grabbed my most important documents and went out of here,” Spark said.

The building had five occupants at the time of the explosion, and two of them had been taken to a hospital with burn injuries. They are being treated at Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit, and their current condition is unknown.

Neighbors several houses down heard the explosion as well.

“As soon as the ambulance and the cops got there they were rushing in. All you heard was a big explosion where the house literally shook from the ground up,” said Juan Carlos of Seymour.

The Seymour Fire Marshall’s Office, the police department’s Detective Bureau, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office are all working together to figure out what caused the explosion.

“There’s nothing that’s pointing to criminal right now, but we have to cover all of our bases,” said Chief John Bucherati of the Seymour Police Dept.



Emergency crews discovered a propane gas leak and were able to stop it. According to fire officials, the gas explosion occurred in a basement apartment and caused considerable damage to the building.

Five people were displaced as a result of the explosion. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the displaced residents of the building. The American Red Cross is assisting at Maple street Seymour CT. While the cause of the explosion is still being investigated, officials believe it was caused by propane.
