When the Merritt Parkway was completed all the way to the Housatonic River in 1940, it was hailed as one of the most lovely roads in the country. Everything is prohibited on that road, and only six fuel rest stops are permitted. Many New Yorkers do picnics in the parking lots, relieved to be out of the city. Lorraine Kohn, a local businessperson, recognized the need to open a food restaurant for those who were hungry and began serving hot dogs, burgers, and seafood in a small hut at the north end of Main Street, just off the Merritt Parkway’s main Bridgeport exit.

When things were going well, he opened a drive-in restaurant, Merritt Canteen, in 1958, complete with an ice cream parlor, patio, and garage-style doors that opened the order windows to the sky. The main reason for its popularity was that the prices were low in comparison to any other restaurant.
