Connecticut’s Sikh community has a long history that has developed over the last few decades. It all started in May 1986, at a private residence, when a small group of Sikh families gathered to recite “Keertan” (Sikh hymns) as a congregation. The families decided to continue their Keertan programs in their homes on a monthly basis, with families volunteering to host each month in the Naugatuck Valley area. Following each program was the traditional “Langar,” or community meal. So here are some details of Gurdwara in Connecticut.

1. Southington Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) Guru Nanak Darbar, CT:
Years later, in 1989, the Sikh group of families started renting a hall in Ansonia, CT to celebrate the holiday of “Vaisakhi” – the day of the first Sikh baptism. Several more families from the surrounding Connecticut area joined, and the congregation grew. Seeing this, the Sikh majority agreed to be approved as a non-profit organization and start holding “Gurdwara Diwan,” or prayer services, on a more regular basis, resulting in the formation of the Connecticut Sikh Association, Inc. in November 1993. This is one of the famous Gurdwara in CT. Gurdwara doors are open to everyone, regardless of religion, caste, gender, or race; however, there are a few guidelines that we ask you to follow when visiting any Gurdwara.

2. Gurdwara Sachkhand Darbar Hamden:

The Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Foundation is a non-profit IRS 501© (3) establishment situated in Fairfield country, where Sangat from Connecticut and new york congregates on a regular basis. The “Norwalk gurudwara,” as it is commonly known, is a place of worship managed by the Sikh community that is open to all who seek spiritual enlightenment. Every day of the week, gurudwara sahib is open, and nitnem banies are recited in the morning and evening. Kirtan diwan is held every Friday evening and Sunday morning, as well as on all special occasions/gurupurabs.
