4. Lutz Children’s Museum, Manchester:
Hazel Lutz, the late art teacher, and world traveler was a beloved figure in the community. During her travels, she collected a variety of artifacts and trinkets that she thought children would enjoy. She set up a “museum” in her schoolroom’s storage closet, hoping to use these items as educational tools. Her collection grew as a result of other people’s donations and began to include items that could be related to almost any academic discipline. The collection was gradually moved from her storage closet to larger and more public spaces. The PTA established the Lutz Children’s Museum in her honor in 1953. To this day, the museum provides children with educational and cultural opportunities that they would not have had otherwise, as well as provides teachers with additional enrichment and resource materials.
